Asamoah Gyan makes a statement on his Barclays Premier League debut on Saturday as he opened his scoring account for Sunderland.

The Ghana striker came on for the Black Cats at half-time, and claimed a debut goal against Wigan as ten-man Sunderland drew 1-1 at the DW Stadium.

Gyan stabbed home a left-footed volley on the edge of the six-yard box on 66 minutes.

But Antolin Alcaraz scored a dramatic late equaliser for Wigan to share the spoils.

Ghana defender, John Mensah was also a second half substitute for Sunderland, coming on in the 80th minute.
