Ghanaian internationals, Michael Essien and John Mensah have supported the campaign for the provision of antiretroviral drugs for HIV infected children in the country.

The two Black Stars players interacted with children diagnosed of HIV at the Ridge Hospital in Accra on Tuesday.

The session was organized by Woyome Foundation for Africa (WOFA) - an HIV/AIDS Charity Organization - which supports the cause of HIV infected persons in Ghana and Africa.

A WOFA statement says both Ghanaian stars are ambassadors of the Foundation working to support the One-for-One campaign which aims at assisting with the provision of antiretroviral drugs, boosters, nutritional support and care to especially infected children.

Essien and Mensah, Special Advocates for WOFA’s one-on-one campaign which is aimed at providing treatment, therapy and care for children infected with HIV/AIDS would be continued throughout the year.

The Black Stars pair have already helped raise in excess in excess of $8000 at a painting exhibition dubbed Red Expressions. The paintings were done by children infected with HIV.

The money raised from the paintings, according to WOFA, will go a long way in paying for a full supply of antiretroviral drugs and boosters for over a 100 children.

Both players say the ultimate aim is to ensure that all infected children have access to drugs to keep them alive.

In a joint statement, the two Black Stars players said: “Having grown up here and as witnesses to the difficulty that most people live with, we feel compelled to lend our name and widows mite to the campaign because we can understand the difficulties that those infected children through no fault of theirs are going through.”

WOFA said the visit of the two players, “is a clear demonstration of their commitment to helping in the fight against HIV & AIDS, and to send a clear message that HIV infected persons are like all of us, and do not deserve to be discriminated against.”
