An education teacher, Awuah was traveling on the highway with colleagues after completing a Cooper test (an approved fitness test) for referees when their car was involved in the accident as he later died at the hospital. His two other colleagues - Reginald Lathbridge and Kennedy Bentil - survived.

Awuah, a Class One Referee took the whistle for the final time on December 19, 2010 when he handled the Premier League clash between Kessben FC and King Faisal at the Sekondi Sports Stadium.
