Ghana's victory over Brazil at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup has thrown Group D wide open ahead of the final group games.

The Black Maidens beat the much-fancied South Americans 1-0 on Thursday in Arima and now need to beat the Republic of Ireland on Monday to progress past the group stages.

All four teams are balanced on three points apiece going into the final group games.

A simple tap in from Alice Danso in the first half was enough to earn Ghana a first win and the three points after having lost to Canada in the opening match.

In an entertaining fixture which presented very few goal scoring chances, the Black Maidens had to wait until the 22nd minute before finding the back of the net.

Brazilian goalkeeper Daniele spilled Linda Addai’s strike from outside the box and Alice who followed up the shot had to just tap in against the Canarinhas.

Ghana goalkeeper Margaret Otoo did well to deny keep the Black Maidens in the lead, pulling off some great saves in the last ten minutes of the match.

Otoo blocked an effort from Glaucia in the 83rd minute and then, in the 90th, she had to rush out to deny Jucinara as Ghana had to endure five minutes of stoppage time.

With every team having a realistic chance at progressing through to the quarter-finals, Ghana knows that their work is cut out as they meet the Irish who beat Canada 1-0 in the other group game.
