The Football Association has reinforced its commitment to protecting young footballers after coaches participating in the Licence D coaching programme in the Central Region received training on safeguarding, football integrity and the prevention of abuse.

The session emphasised the responsibility of coaches and other adults to create safe, supportive environments for children across all aspects of the game, from training grounds and changing rooms to competitions, travel and interactions beyond the pitch.

Participants were urged to recognise child protection as a collective responsibility within football, with the safety and wellbeing of young players taking precedence over results and performance.

Coaches were also encouraged to understand that children develop at different rates and respond differently to pressure, criticism and competition. The training highlighted the importance of patient guidance, respectful communication and positive reinforcement in building confidence and supporting young players’ development.

A key component of the session focused on recognising and preventing abuse, maintaining appropriate boundaries and responding promptly whenever safeguarding concerns arise.

The dangers of trafficking in football were also addressed, with coaches sensitised to how vulnerable young players can be exploited through false promises of trials, contracts, overseas travel and professional careers.

The training forms part of the GFA’s broader efforts to embed safeguarding and integrity into coach education, equipping coaches with the knowledge and responsibility to protect children and promote a safer football environment across Ghana.
