FA pats Hearts as they celebrate first 100 years

They are one hundred years old and that is Accra Hearts of Oak, the twenty-times league champions in Ghana, one-time lords of Africa with nine FA Cups to their name.

Hearts of Oak celebrate their centenary on Friday having made an impressive start to the season and improved the off-field running of the club.

The Ghana Football Association joins congratulates the Phobian family in reaching a memorable milestone.


Dear Sir,


On the rare occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the existence of the Glorious Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club, I wish to congratulate you, the Board, Management, Council of Patrons, Sponsors and Partners, Supporters and all well wishes of the Great Oak Family. 100 years in the life of any institution is no mean achievement. Hearts of Oak was founded from very humble beginnings on the sound values of Excellence, Perseverance, Fair-play, Equity and Good Governance.

Over the years, the club has played a leading role in the development of football talents in Ghana.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) recognizes the sterling contributions of Hearts of Oak to the development of the game in Ghana. We note, with pride, that your efforts in the country have witnessed the development of players into the various National Teams. They include but not limited to the following:

Your brilliant exploits on the domestic front ensured that you won twenty (20) league titles and nine (9) FA Cup Championships. At the Continental level, you have won the CAF Champions League trophy (2000), CAF Super Cup trophy (2000) and the Confederation Cup trophy (2004).

Apart from your successes on the field of play, you have trained several personalities who have taken up various positions at the FA. They include:

The Late H. P. Nyametei, GFA Chairman (1960 – 1966) The Late Elias Teye, GFA Chairman (1984 – 1986) Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, GFA Chairman (2004 – 2005)

Other prominent officials of Hearts of Oak who served the GFA with distinction are His Excellency Professor J. E. A. Mills, President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Kofi Kumado, Messrs Ernest Thompson, Randy Abbey, Fred Crentsil, Ashford Tetteh-Oku and Jones Attuquayefio.

We hope you will build on the modest gains achieved over the past Century as a basis for greater achievements in the future.
