Michael Essien is among 14 African Union Peace Ambassadors appointed to promote peace and better security on the continent.

The African Union also designated football legend Abedi Pele among other eminent African personalities to champion the Year of Peace and Security Programme come September 21.

“I am truly honoured by the African Union’s decision to consider and appoint me a Peace Ambassador,” Essien said.

“I know with my image and experience in the past I can play an important role in fostering peace not only in Africa but throughout the world.

“I will give my all in this new position to help to contribute to peace and security in Africa, which has been a challenge in some areas of our continent.

“This is a very important challenge that needs addressing and I hope I will achieve our aim of fostering peace, love and unity in Africa.”

The AU Commission chair, Jean Ping, added: “In order for the Year of Peace and Security to be successful, it is important that Africans take ownership and direct, as well as participate in the implementation of its program.
