The Black Starlets endured a frustrating afternoon as they slipped to a 2–0 defeat to Ivory Coast’s Young Elephants in an international friendly at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe.
Despite dominating large spells of the game and creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities, the Starlets were left to rue their profligacy in front of goal as the hosts capitalised on key moments to secure victory.
Ghana started brightly and should have taken an early lead when captain Joseph Narbi connected with a delightful cross from Kingsley Fosu, only to see his effort blocked for a corner. The Starlets continued to pile on the pressure, with Isaac Barfo also going close shortly after, forcing a save from the Ivorian goalkeeper.
The Black Starlets’ attacking intent remained evident throughout the first half, with their fluid build-up play and high pressing keeping the hosts on the back foot. Mark Aboagye came closest to breaking the deadlock just before halftime after being put through by Issah, but his one-on-one effort was brilliantly denied by the goalkeeper.
After the break, Ghana maintained their dominance, and Abraham Amoah had another clear opportunity to open the scoring but fired straight at the goalkeeper, summing up the team’s struggles in front of goal.
The turning point came midway through the second half when injuries to Kingsley Fosu and Isaac Barfo disrupted Ghana’s rhythm. As they received treatment, a lapse in concentration allowed Ivory Coast to seize control. Diabate Yussouf capitalised with a well-taken curler to break the deadlock against the run of play.
The hosts grew in confidence following the opener and doubled their advantage through Nomane Guy, effectively sealing the contest despite Ghana’s earlier superiority.
The two sides will face off again on Thursday in the second leg of the friendly series at the same venue, as both teams continue preparations for the upcoming U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
