The Management Committee of the national U-23 team, the Black Meteors, has officially begun preparations for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games qualifiers, as Ghana sets its sights on returning to the global stage for the first time in 24 years. The Olympic Games will be hosted in Los Angeles, USA, from July 14 to 30, 2028.
The committee held its maiden strategic planning meeting on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the headquarters of the Football Association. The session was chaired by Executive Council member Eugene Nobel Noel and attended by President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, who expressed his appreciation to members for their dedication and set the tone for a productive engagement.
Discussions centered on developing an elaborate action plan to ensure the Black Meteors’ successful qualification campaign. Key areas addressed included technical preparations, sponsorship and promotional strategies, friendly matches and logistical arrangements to provide the team with the best possible platform for success.
As part of the planning process, the committee will soon meet with the technical team led by head coach Desmond Ofei to align on technical objectives and timelines. The Football Association has expressed its determination to return the Black Meteors to the Olympic stage for the first time in 24 years, having last featured at the Athens 2004 Games.
The journey begins with the qualifiers for the CAF TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which serves as the qualifying competition for the Olympics. The qualifiers are scheduled to kick off in September 2026, and Ghana will be looking to make a strong start after missing out on qualification for both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
The meeting was attended by Vice Chairman Hon. Fred Agbenyo and committee member Michael Boakye, alongside key GFA staff including Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe (Head of PR and Strategy), Janice Odonkor (Business Development Manager), and Patrick Akoto (Senior Communications Manager and Media Attaché at the Office of the President).
With the planning phase officially underway, the Football Association has reaffirmed its commitment to investing in the team’s development and ensuring the Black Meteors’ successful return to the Olympics.
