The wait is over as Ashantigold confirmed their status as new champions after their last title success came some 19 years ago.

Ashantigold defeated WAFA 1-0 in Obuasi to dethrone neighbours, Asante Kotoko as the 2014-15 Premier League winners.

Emmanuel Osei was the hero of the afternoon after converting a 72nd minute penalty to hand the Miners the points which guaranteed them their fourth league title.

The win hands Bashir Hayford's side a six point lead ahead of the final game of the season.

Ashantigold went into the match needing to match the results of second placed Aduana Stars, who drew at home to New Edubiase.

The Miners went a step further by sealing the championship in a spectacular fashion before their home fans in their penultimate league match.

The new champions will face Great Olympics in their final match in Accra. The Obuasi side will officially be presented with the First Capital Plus Premier League title away from home.

Ashantigold first won the Premier League in the 1993/94 season and dominated for two more years, winning successive titles in 1995 and 1996.

The Miners, however, went on a long wait for another title, and came closest in 2010. However, they were pipped to the title on the final day of the season by Aduana Stars.
