Asante Kotoko pip WAFA, Medeama SC ends Aduana’s 6-game winning run – GPL Review

Asante Kotoko continued their winning run on Match Day 10 of the Ghana Premier League as they edged WAFA SC 1-0 at the Baba Yara sports Stadium.

The Porcupine Warriors who recorded a 1-0 win against Legon Cities last weekend needed a Richmond Lamptey strike to beat the Academy boys. The former Inter Allies player shot from the inside of the box to condemn his former side to another defeat on the road.

Stephen Amankona headed wide from a corner kick as Kotoko started chasing the game on a strong footing. Justus Torsutsey shot from long range to catch Abalora off his line but his effort went wide.

Both team s played with great team chemistry but Asante Kotoko looked hungrier for the points in front of their home fans. Fabio Gama fed off a pass from Amakona in the 25th minute but the Brazilian shot wide to leave the score line unchanged.

The Warriors finally got their breakthrough in the 59th minute through Richmond Lamptey. The midfielder fed on Mfegue’s pass inside the box before firing home a rebound for the opener and the match winner. His first shot was blocked by the WAFA backline but scored full marks with the second effort.

Richmond Lamptey near scored his second of the day in the 79th minute but his effort was saved by the WAFA shot stopper Osei Kwadwo Bonsu.

George Mfegue was also on hand for the second goal but his shot wide as Asante Kotoko held on to win the game 1-0 – their second win on the spin to move to the top of the table with 20 points despite having a game in hand.

At the Akoon Park in Tarkwa - Amed Toure scored an absolute stunner as Medeama SC beat in form Aduana Stars 1-0 to pull breaks on their winning run. Toure fired home the only goal of the match in the 88th minute to give Medeama all the spoils on home soil. Aduana had won their last six matches and were looking to improving their stock at the Akoon Park.

Stephen Anokye Badu scored from the spot in the 41st minute as Berekum Chelsea pip AshantiGold SC 1-0 at the Golden City Park.

At the Fosu Gyeabuor Park – experienced forward Augustine Okrah scored in the 80th minute for Bechem United in their 1-0 win over King Faisal.

Yussif Abdul Razak and James Akaminko scored within two minutes as Great Olympics defeated Eleven Wonders 2-0 at the WAFA Park at Sogakope.

In Bibiani – new boys Gold Stars put up a gallant display to overcome Karela United FC 3- 1 at DUN’s Park. Prince Owusu Kwabena opened the scoring after connecting from the spot in the 44th minute having found his first strike in the 24th minute ruled out for offside.

Charles Kamara Gyamfi increased the tally in the 62nd minute. Karela United pulled one back in the 65th minute of the game but their comeback was not meant to be as the home side put the nail in the coffin in the 82nd minute through Nuhu Sule. Bibiani Gold Stars are now 9th in the table with 13 points while Karela United sit in 13th place with 10 points.

Earlier on Saturday, League Champions Accra Hearts of Oak fought from behind to draw 2-2 with Dreams FC at the theatre of Dreams at Dawu.

There shall be two matches on Monday December 27, 2021. Elmina Sharks will be at home against Legon Cities while Accra Loins welcome to the WAFA Park at Sogakope in the other match.
