Fenerbahçe SK says they will continue to service Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah’s contract throughout the six-month period that the midfielder will be out of action because of injury.

After reports that his club had suspended the player’s contract and froze all payments due him, the Turkish title-holders have moved to clarify their position over the matter.

Though Fenerbahçe have omitted Stephen Appiah from their squad for the second half of the season as he continues his recovery from injury, he would be entitled to his salary.

According to the club, the move to take off Appiah’s name from the squad list is to enable them fill their quota of foreign players with a replacement.

And the club says a consensus has been reached with the Ghana captain.

"Following discussions between Stephen Appiah and club doctors, there is a consensus not to include him in the team for the second half of the season to better enable the process of treating his injury.

"As a result of his absence, an application has been made to the Turkish Football Association to adjust the quota of foreign players: our club would like to include another foreign player in the team for the six months when Appiah is due to be missing.

"There is no thought at all of cancelling or annulling the contract of Stephen Appiah," the club said in a statement.

Stephen Appiah has struggled with injury throughout the season following surgery to repair torn ligaments in his knees. He has been limited to only six league appearances for Fenerbahçe this season.

The injury concerns forced Appiah out of the Black Stars Africa Cup of Nations squad.
