An understrength Asante Kotoko side added to Hearts of Oak's poor run in recent time by beating the Phobians 1-0 to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the May 9 disaster that claimed the lives of 126 fans at the Ohene Djan Stadium.

Some 126 fans died after a stampede broke out in one of the stands at the Stadium after a league match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Police officers fired tear gas into the stand and in their efforts to control rioting fans rather ended the lives of the fans who were crushed to death while attempting to escape.

In each of the 8 years since Ghana football's most horrific day, a memorial service has been held at the Ohene Djan Stadium (then know as Accra Sports Stadium), as prayers and a minute's silence are observed for what happened.

But on Sunday, the two sides played a commemorative match to remember the disaster's 9th anniversary.

Poor defending cost Hearts dearly as Kwadwo Poku Jnr put Kotoko in the lead slotting past former Ghana international, Sammy Adjei.

As the game progressed, the Hearts of Oak bench introduced Samuel Affum in their search for the equalizer after Mahathma Otoo and Tawrick Jibril had both failed to find target.
