Black Starlets midfielder David Kwarteng has etched his name into the history books of WAFU B after becoming the first player to score at the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Kwarteng netted in the seventh minute of Ghana’s opening Group A encounter against Togo on Saturday, October 10, at the August 4 Sports Stadium to hand the Black Starlets a 1-0 victory and a winning start to their campaign.

The historic goal came from a well-rehearsed set-piece routine initiated by Abdul Latif Wunzalgu. After the free-kick was blocked, captain Abdul Rafiu Issah followed up with an attempt before Kwarteng pounced on the opportunity to find the back of the net.

The early strike proved decisive as Ghana held on to secure all three points in their opening fixture, making Kwarteng’s goal the first to be recorded at this year’s tournament.

The victory also propelled the Black Starlets to the top of Group A after hosts Burkina Faso and Benin played out a goalless draw in the other group fixture.

Kwarteng’s historic contribution provides Ghana with a positive foundation as they pursue qualification for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations through the regional competition.

The Black Starlets will return to action on Tuesday, October 13, when they face Benin in their second group match, with Kwarteng and his teammates aiming to build on their impressive start in Ouagadougou.
