The Black Princesses restored Ghana’s pride in football at the 9th All Africa Games when they sealed a place in the semi-finals after beating Senegal on Sunday.

Ghana, who before the game needed just a point to sail through grabbed two first half goals past their fellow debutants in the women’s football event within five minutes at the Bologhine Stadium through Portia Boakye who grabbed a brace on the day and Sheila Owusu.

After 30 minutes of play, Portia Boakye put Ghana in the lead before team captain, Diana Ankomah set up Sheila Owusu to double up for the Black Princesses.

Ghana ended the half 2-0 up. Back from recess, the Black Princesses showed their intent for more goals but had to wait for sometime before Portia Boakye got the third which happened to be her personal second to wrap up victory.

Boakye is now at par with team captain, Diana Ankomah on the goal chart with two goals apiece.

The win for the under-19 national side which send Ghana top of the group restored the nation’s dwindling run in the football event after the male side missed out of a place in the next stage of the competition following two successive defeats.

Ghana top Group B and would line up for one of the two semi-final places scheduled for Wednesday at the 20 Aout stadium against the second-placed team from Group A for a possible place in the finals.

This is the second time in succession that women are playing at the All Africa Games in the football after the 2003 event and the first for Ghana.

The Games, which represents Africa’s version of the Olympic Games draws lots of countries to participate in a host of sporting events.
