Police Ladies begin title defence with thrilling 4-1 win over Halifax Queens in Southern Zone

Jonina Ladies kicked off their 2025/26 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League campaign in spectacular fashion, securing a commanding 4-0 victory over Soccer Intellectuals at the Antie Aku Astro Turf.

The home side took an early lead, with Agnes Yeboah opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Joyce Atimbila then doubled their advantage before the halftime whistle, sending Jonina into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Yeboah netting her second of the day in the 53rd minute. A late penalty, coolly converted by Belinda Ofori, sealed a perfect start for Jonina Ladies, who cruised to a comprehensive 4-0 win on the opening day.

Defending Champions Police Ladies began their title defense in style with a 4-1 win over Halifax Queens.

Police Ladies wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead five minutes into the game through Grace Animah, who calmly slotted home after a well-worked team move. Halifax struggled to find their rhythm early on and were often forced to defend deep to contain the relentless Police attack.

Police Ladies doubled their advantage in the 44th minute when Deborah Afriyie capitalized on a defensive mix-up to make it 2-0 just before halftime.

Deborah Afriyie struck again in the 63rd minute to extend Police’s lead to 3-0, completing her brace in fine style. Halifax finally found a response in the 78th minute when Cecilia Acquah pulled one back, finishing off a swift counterattack to make it 3-1.

Police Ladies, however, quickly restored their three-goal cushion five minutes later through Grace Animah, who netted her second of the day in the 83rd minute to seal an emphatic 4-1 victory.

In Pobiman, Oak Ladies and Hasaacas Ladies shared the spoils in a thrilling encounter.

Oak Ladies were held to a goalless draw by Hasaacas Ladies at the Pobiman Sports Complex. The home side started strongly, creating several chances but failed to convert any.

Hasaacas Ladies also showed great fighting spirit, pressing hard but often losing possession. The game was intense and physical, with both teams displaying skill and determination. Oak Ladies continued to dominate in the second half but their finishing let them down. Both teams settled for a draw after a great display of offensive and defensive performances.
