Large local component merit call up

Ghana U-23 team coach, Kwesi Appiah has explained the rationale behind his player call ups into the national side.

The Black Meteors coach last week announced a provisional 30-man squad for the 2011 All Africa Games, largely dominated by local players with just two foreign players making the list.

The squad called up shows a significant shift from the foreign-dominated team that qualified Ghana for next month's Games in Mozambique.

But as the Black Meteors begin preparations on Tuesday in Accra, Appiah says the Games, which clashes with the start of the major European leagues makes it difficult to turn to such (foreign) players.

"Ideally, we would have loved to have every player available for preparations and the Games. But that looks like an impossibility considering the fixture clashes and the AAG not being on the Fifa match calendar," the Ghana coach said.

"Many of them (foreign players) helped in the qualification process so did their local colleagues. We have to work with what we have."

"But I trust the players we have called to give it their best shot and push very far in the campaign. A good number of them have the exposure for such competitions."

Ghana have drawn in Group B with defending champions, Cameroon for this year’s Games.

The Black Meteors are also paired Uganda and Senegal in the same group for the Games which runs from 3-11 September.
