The Ashanti Region booked their place in the final of the 2025 KGL U-17 Inter-Regional Championship after a thrilling 6–5 penalty shootout victory over Greater Accra in Thursday’s semi-final at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.
The match lived up to its billing as a clash of heavyweights. Greater Accra, unbeaten heading into the fixture, seized the initiative in the first half and looked in control until Ashanti found a crucial second-half equaliser to force a 1–1 draw in regulation time.
Philip Amponsah gave Greater Accra the lead, but Alidu Issah leveled for Ashanti to force a gripping penalty shootout.
In the ensuing drama from the spot, Ashanti held their nerve and converted the decisive kick, sealing a hard-fought victory and a second final appearance in three years.
Ashanti will now face defending champions Western Region in the championship decider at the McDan Teshie Sports Complex on Saturday September 27, promising an exciting finale to Ghana’s premier youth football competition.
Ashanti will be aiming for a second championship crown, having captured their first title in 2023 with a memorable victory over Brong Ahafo in a thrilling final in Kumasi.
The 2025 tournament features an expanded 12-team lineup, uniting all ten Regional Football Associations and the two GFA Elite Academies, ensuring both competitive depth and nationwide representation.
Backed by a landmark five-year, $1 million sponsorship from the KGL Foundation, the championship remains central to the Ghana Football Association’s grassroots development strategy, driving talent identification, safeguarding player welfare and inspiring the next generation of Ghanaian football stars.
