Japan beat Ghana 2-0 in the 2025 Kirin Championship at the Toyota Stadium in Aichi on Friday. The hosts took the lead thanks to Takumi Minamino's 15th-minute goal. The Blue Samurai continued to dominate, and Ritsu Doan doubled their lead in the 59th minute with a fine goal, curling the ball into the bottom corner.
Despite Ghana's efforts, Japan's defense held strong, securing a 2-0 win. Joseph Anang and Derrick Kohn got their first Ghana start under head coach Otto Addo. Anang, the St. Patrick's Athletic shot-stopper, was selected for the first time following an impressive performance at club level. The backline featured Jerome Opoku, Kojo Oppong Peprah, and Jonas Adjetey, with Caleb Yirenkyi and Derrick Kohn operating as wingbacks.
Kwasi Sibo partnered Francis Abu in midfield, while Kamal Deen Sulemana, Antoine Semenyo, and Brandon Thomas-Asante played in the front three.
In the second half, Christopher Bonsu Baah, Prince Owusu, Prince Kwabena Adu, Gideon Mensah, Alidu Seidu and Prince Osei Owusu were introduced as the Black Stars pushed for a goal. Kamal Deen Sulemana had his shot well saved by the Japan goalkeeper in the 71st minute.
Joseph Anang made some impressive saves but ultimately couldn't prevent the defeat. Ghana created some opportunities, but Japan's defense was solid, and Anang made crucial saves to keep Ghana in the game. The win boosts Japan's preparations for the 2026 World Cup, while Ghana will look to bounce back from this defeat when they face South Korea in an international friendly on November 18, 2025.
