The Ghana Premier League has started on a positive note, producing a total of 19 goals on Matchday One, with home teams accounting for 15 goals and away teams scoring four.
The opening weekend produced five wins for home teams and one draw, with no away victories recorded. The only draw came in the encounter between Debibi United and Asante Kotoko, which ended 2-2, with Kotoko scoring twice away from home. AshantiGold also scored once away from home, while Karela United found the net once in their 3-1 defeat to FC Samartex.
One fixture remains outstanding between Medeama SC and Dreams FC, with Medeama's involvement in the CAF Champions League leading to the postponement of the game. Only five clubs won their opening matches, while five others suffered defeats and therefore dropped out of the unbeaten-run table.
Vision FC attacker Naziru Alhassan Nyenye made history by scoring the first goal of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season. He found the back of the net in the 5th minute as Vision FC defeated Young Apostles 3-0 on Saturday. His teammate, Sitsofia Aqetey, then became the first player to score a brace in the new season after netting twice against Young Apostles.
John Antwi later joined the brace club after scoring twice in Hearts of Oak's emphatic 4-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea, while Debibi United attacking midfielder Richard Owusu also scored twice in the 2-2 draw against Asante Kotoko, becoming the third player to register a brace this season.
FC AshantiGold became the first club to be awarded a penalty in the league when they were handed a spot-kick in the 51st minute of their match against Port City. However, Edmond Amakye missed the opportunity, becoming the first player to miss a penalty this season. The Port City goalkeeper, who was making his debut in the league, saved the spot-kick and became the first goalkeeper to record a penalty save in the 2026/27 campaign.
Hearts of Oak's 4-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea was also significant as it ended the club's long-standing struggles on Matchday One. The Phobians had not won their opening league fixture since 2016, when they defeated New Edubiase United 1-0. They had struggled in their Matchday One fixtures since 2017, but that unwanted record finally came to an end in emphatic fashion.
John Antwi, who returned to the club after previously having a stint with Hearts of Oak in 2011, marked his return with a brace and played a key role in the impressive opening-day victory.
Overall, Matchday One has provided plenty of excitement and talking points, with 19 goals, three braces, a penalty miss, a penalty save and several new records already established. The opening round has set the stage for what promises to be an intriguing and competitive 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
