Optimum Media Prime (OMP) has secured the television production and broadcast rights to the Glo Premier League organised by the Ghana Football Association.
The Ghana Football Association today signed a contract with OMP and its broadcasters, Metro TV to telecast the premiership for two-and-half years, granting the Ghanaian-based television channel exclusive rights to broadcast the elite league, the Glo Premier League on their network.
The deal worth GH¢1.7 million which begins with the second round of the league hands Metro TV, the television channel the rights to broadcast the domestic competition which will also to be viewed on other terrestrial channels including satellite broadcaster, DSTV.
According to OMP, GH¢300,000 will be paid for the remainder of the season with the package for the next season being GH¢600,000. The final year will see OMP pay GH¢800,000.
“Getting the league on such channels brings additional value to the league. We are happy to have been able to bring on a new partner following the liquidation of our former media partners, GBS.
“We hope this would bring the league enough exposure to all connected to the sport and make it more attractive. It would certainly add some quality to the standard of the game. And we hope we gradually match some established leagues.
“The league has to be promoted. And the media has a role to play in this drive. Lots of focus is on the European leagues but we have a responsibility to build our brand,” Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the Ghana Football Association said at the signing of the agreement.
By the contract, Metro TV will telecast some games every week including one live match and a 30-minutes highlights package.
The Ghana Football Association in February 2009 invited bids for the television rights to the Glo Premier League, following the termination of the previous deal with Gateway Broadcast Services (GBS).
Ghana’s premier league had enjoyed television audience across the continent since last season but that arrangement was scuppered following the liquidation of Gateway Broadcast Services Limited as announced by its board on 30th January, 2008.
