Michael Essien's expected return to first team action with Chelsea now remains in doubt.
He has suffered some complications in his rehabilitation.
The midfielder was tipped to have the squad for the weekend's clash against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge but a Chelsea spokesperson says Essien might not play any part in the crunch stage of the campaign.
"Michael Essien will not be in the squad for the weekend's game against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge," said a club spokesman.
"The Ghanaian's participation in the remainder of the campaign is now in doubt, with only four games to play including the FA Cup Final on May 15."
Essien has not played for Chelsea since limping off in their champions league win over Appoel Nicosia of Cyprus in December.
His return coincided with Ghana's participation at the 2010 African Nations Cup but an injury in training forced him out of the competition.
