Ghana midfielder, Michael Essien has been named Chelsea Player of the Year for 2007.

The award, presented by the club's life vice-president Lord Attenborough, was the climax of a ceremony in Battersea, London.

Essien beat fellow nominees Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho to the award, voted for by the club's supporters.

Essien's 40-yard thunderbolt against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge also won him the supporters' choice for the Chelsea Goal of the season for 2007.
