Day Six of Module Two of the CAF License A Coaching Course shifted attention to one of football’s most critical yet often underappreciated pillars—sports medicine—through an outstanding session delivered by Prince Pambo, CAF Medical Committee member and FIFA Match Doctor.
Bringing a rare blend of medical excellence and deep understanding of the football environment, Dr. Pambo delivered a lecture that immediately resonated with participants. His session covered key areas including injury prevention strategies, load management, the physiological demands of congested fixtures, and the medical responsibilities tied to player welfare during both training and competition.
With clarity and precision, he translated complex medical concepts into practical, accessible knowledge, equipping coaches with tools they can readily apply within their teams. His central message was clear: a coach who understands the fundamentals of sports medicine is not only more effective, but also more responsible in managing players.
He also addressed a critical challenge within many football environments—poor communication between technical teams and medical staff. Drawing on real-world evidence, he noted that this disconnect often leads to preventable injuries, rushed recoveries, and, in some cases, shortened player careers. This reality, he emphasized, is particularly relevant in the African context, where medical structures at club level can vary significantly.
The session left a lasting impression on participants, many of whom described it as transformative in reshaping their approach to player management. Coaches expressed a renewed commitment to fostering stronger, more structured collaboration with their medical teams, recognizing that bridging the gap between the technical bench and the treatment room is essential for sustained performance and player longevity.
