The 2025 WAFU Zone B U20 Boys Cup kicked off in thrilling fashion as the Black Satellites and the Flying Eagles of Nigeria played out a pulsating 1-1 draw in their Group A opener at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Thursday afternoon.

Ghana took the lead in the first half through team captain Aziz Misbau, who fired a thunderous shot into the roof of the net to send the home fans into a frenzy. The Black Satellites dominated early proceedings with pace and purpose, pressing Nigeria high up the pitch and creating several chances.

But the Flying Eagles responded strongly in the second half, and their persistence paid off when Abdullahi Muhammed rose highest to meet a corner kick with a well-timed header, bringing Nigeria level with a brilliant finish that stunned the Ghanaian defense.

The match was played with intense aggression from both sides, as the two West African powerhouses battled for control in midfield and showed flashes of attacking flair throughout the 90 minutes. Despite late efforts from both teams, neither could find a winner.

With the result, both Ghana and Nigeria earn a point each in the three-team Group A, which also includes Benin. Nigeria will now turn their attention to Sunday’s clash with Benin, while Ghana will sit out and await the final group match, which will determine the semi-final qualification scenarios.

The opener lived up to the billing, showcasing not only the historic rivalry between the two nations but also the depth of talent on display in West African youth football.
