Asante Kotoko’s campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup got off the ground on an impressive note with a 2-2 draw away in Nigeria.

The Porcupine Warriors were held by Wikki Tourists on Saturday as a late equaliser saved the blushes of the Nigerian side in the first leg tie of the first round stage of the competition.

The fixture was Kotoko’s first continental game in the Caf Confederations Cup and also coach Bashiru Hayford’s debut continental game.

Wikki registered the game’s first goal in the first half sending the partisan crowd into jubilation to end the first half 1-0.

After the break, Kotoko made fast start to the match and deservedly managed to draw level. Kotoko’s equaliser came from a Daniel Nii Adjei effort in the second half.

The hosts were further stunned as the Porcupine Warriors jumped into the lead for the first time in the game.

Emmanuel Osei Kuffour, Kotoko’s most experienced player, who helped their archrivals Accra Hearts of Oak to the CAF Confederation Cup title in 2004 got the second goal.

Kotoko looked destined for an away win but then, Wikki Tourists struck late on to tie the game at 2-2.

The return leg of the competition which comes with a prize money of $300,000 will be played at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi in a fortnight as the Porcupine Warriors, losing finalist in the maiden tournament seek to end their continental drought with their last glory coming some 25 years ago.
