Ghanaian clubs among Africa's best 10

The presence of the two local clubs in the top ten of the Africa Club Ranking proves that Ghana football is in a league of its own.

Ghana’s two biggest teams, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak claim places on the list of the continent’s top ten best club sides.

The African Club Ranking which has collated records from 1965 to 2007 of each club’s performance in the continents various club competitions awards points for every stage a participating team reaches was released this week by CAF.

Ghana together with Egypt, Tunisia and Ivory Coast at the only country's with two representatives making up the top ten.

The Confederation of African Football awards points from the Champions League, Confederation Cup, Super Cup to the World Club Championship.

Asante Kotoko are ranked the fourth best club by the Confederation of African Football after cup successes in the former African Cup of Champions Clubs, now christened, Champions League, recording 43 points within the period of the collation of results.

The Porcupine Warriors won the competition on two occasions in 1970 and 1983 and managed final berths in 1967, 1971, 1973, 1982 and 1993.

The Reds were also runners-up in the 2002 African Cup Winners Cup competition and the 2005 CAF Confederation Cup competition.

Kotoko’s rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak are placed 8th in the top ten list having bagged 32 points.

The Phobians won the CAF Champions League in 2000 after claiming two runners-up positions in the old version of the competition in 1977 and 1979.

Hearts of Oak won the African Super Cup Championship in 2001 before adding CAF Confederation Cup to their list of continental titles in 2005.

Egypt’s Al Ahly top the ranking table with 68 points.

Fourth place 1 point

* Confederation Cup (2004 till present)

Winner 4 points
Runner up 3 points
Second place 2 points
Third place 1 point
Fourth place 1 point

* African Cup of Champions Clubs (1965-1996)

Winner 4 points
Runner up 3 points
Semi finalist 2 points
1/4 final 1 point

*Africa Cup Winners cup (1975-2003)

Winner 4 points
Runner up 3 points
Semi finalist 2 points
1/4 final 1 point

* CAF Cup (1992-2003)

Winner 4 points
Runner up 3 points
Semi finalist 2 points
1/4 final 1 point
