The Ghana Football Association has confirmed the names of the country’s four representatives for next year’s continental club football competitions.
This decision was after Tuesday morning’s meeting at the FA’s headquarters involving members of the football body, the Professional League Board and representatives of all the sixteen premier league clubs.
A stakeholders meeting named Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold as the representatives for the MTN/CAF Champions League competition.
While Liberty Professionals and premiership debutants, Tema Youth pick up the two remaining slots for the Confederation Cup tournament.
For the first time in over a decade, Accra Hearts of Oak, who were in contention for a place in Africa and Ghana’s most successful side on the continent lately, surprisely pulled out of continental club football.
The lot fell on Tema Youth following the three-year ban on Kpando Heart of Lions which elapses this year and the subsequent withdrawal of Berekum Arsenals.
Arsenals sought to seek the FA and Government’s guaranteed assistance before endorsing their candidature for continental football.
But with no such guarantees assured for now, the Gunners chose to withdraw leaving the premiership debutants with the option of picking up the slot.
Ghana are one of the 12 African countries, determined by a calculation of results over the five preceding years, that are allowed to enter two clubs in each of the competitions.
The draw for the 2007 Champions League and Confederation Cup is expected to be released by CAF later this month.
