John Mensah is looking to play a part in Sunderland's next premiership game against Wigan this weekend after confirming that he is ready to make a return from injury.
The Ghana defender has missed missed three games of the new campaign against West Brom, Colchester and Manchester City after he was hamstrung in the opening day draw against Birmingham.
"I am feeling good and I am ready to play against Wigan," Mensah told the club's official website.
But after making a return to training, Mensah has been boosted by comments from manager Steve Bruce who says the defender will only feature if he proves himself in training in the build-up to the clash.
"John will only be in contention if he trains consistently this week," Bruce said.
Mensah's time at the Black Cats has been dogged by fitness problems.
