Ghana would still have a representative in the CAF Champions League after the first knockout round matches produced mixed results for the countr's two sides involved in the competition.
Accra Hearts of Oak and AshantiGold, losers in the first leg matches of the knockout round played away needed convincing wins to progress as AshantiGold won the bet while Hearts of Oak bowed out.
There was joy in the Ghanaian mining town of Obuasi where AshantiGold staged a six-star performance to win 6-1 over Sahel FC and book a place in the next stage of the CAF Champions League at the Len Clay Stadium.
The win handed the Miners a 6-2 aggregate win over the two-leg tie.
AshantiGold 0-1 losers in the first leg match in Libreville took the lead in the first half through Jonathan Mensah but Amadou Sarko stunned the home side when he cancelled out their lead to end the first half one goal apiece.
The second half produced an improved performance from the Miners who found the back of the net five times.
After 20 minutes of play in the second period, Alex Asamoah restored the Miners’ lead before a Mubarak Wakasu goal from the spot kick and a fourth by Sumaila Nyaya.
With just some five minutes remaining on the clock, Nathaniel Quaye scored the fifth goal before getting his second on the afternoon on the stroke of full time to seal qualification for AshantiGold.
However, in the capital Accra, there was a different story to tell as Accra Hearts of Oak exited the competition after drawing 3-1 with FC 105 of Gabon, thus failing to overturn the 0-3 deficit from the first leg of the knockout round.
The 2000 champions, clearly displayed a below par performance against the Gabonese side in the first half at the Ohene Djan Stadium as FC 105 won 4-3 on aggregate over two legs.
Michael Asante put the Phobians in the lead but Cedric Mintsi drew for the Gabonese to end the first half 1-1 and that goal proved costly for Hearts of Oak.
Late on in the second half, Kofi Abanga put Hearts of Oak in the lead before a late penalty awarded the Phobians was scored by Francis Bossman made it 3-1. But time was up for the Phobians as their late rally could not salvage qualification for them.
