The journey to New Zealand for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup from the African continent would be narrowed to six teams in search of three qualifying places this weekend.
Ghana is one of the twelve teams in the hunt for a place and the Black Maidens would be seeking to seal a place in the next stage of the qualifying round when they go in search of victory over their opponents for Sunday’s second leg fixture, Zambia.
The Black Maidens head into today’s tie with a 2-0 advantage from the previous match played in Lusaka, a fortnight ago.
However, Black Maiden’s coach, Abraham Allotey says the team is not getting carried away by the first leg victory as they would need to win at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra to ensure they remain on course to pick one of the three places available for the debut Under-17 World Cup tournament.
Though playing at home and with a large crowd expected to back the Black Maidens, the Zambians say that could work in their favour.
Zambia’s coach, Wisdom Kaira argues that the pressure would rather be on the Black Maidens.
“Ghana will be under pressure and we are going to take advantage of that fact to ensure that we score goals to qualify to the next stage,” Zambia’s Kaira says.
A win for the Black Maidens, would secure them a place in the next round of the qualifying series and improve their chances of picking one of Africa’s three spots for the first edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup for Under-17’s scheduled for New Zealand from October 28 to November 16, 2008.
The winner over the two legs will host Congo DR in the next round during the weekend of April 2-4 and play the return leg two weeks later.
Congo got a bye following the withdrawal of Zimbabwe.
