Betting syndicates face a tough time next month when the African Cup of Nations kick off in Ghana as the country’s Police administration plan to halt the illegal gambling of football matches.
On Thursday, Ghana’s Police Administration warned betting pundits to desist from operating during the tournament which starts of January 20 and runs to February 10 in four cities.
A statement signed by Acting Director of Public Affairs of the Police Service, DSP Kwesi Ofori, said the service had received reports of illegal betting during such competitions.
"The practice is not only a crime, but it is often linked with other serious offences such as corruption, money laundering and prostitution, which often generate profit at a cost of public service and the safety of hardworking people," the statment read.
The Police say such illegal operations is an organised crime involving lots of money are perpetrated by gangs of criminals.
"The Ghana police in collaboration with INTERPOL are preparing for a massive operation to hunt these criminals and save the people the scourge of this (crime)."
The Police are courting public support as they seek information to enable them stop persons or groups suspected to run such illegal operations in the game during the tournament.
