Earthmoving machines and construction workers would descend on Prampram to begin construction work on the site of Ghana’s national camp, the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.
Later next week, contractors would hit the ground on the 100 acre land area which would be the technical home of the Ghana Football Association.
On Thursday, members of the Ghana Football Association, the sports ministry and the local authorities cut the sod to allow Yangtse River International Engineering Company Limited to begin work on the second phase of the project.
FA President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, general secretary Kofi Nsiah, Fred Crenstil and Awuah Nyamekye, both Executive Committee members together with deputy sports minister, O.B. Amoah joined in to hand over the site to the contractors.
Yangtse River International Engineering Company Limited, who were selected after the award of the tender, would be responsible for constructing two training pitches, changing rooms, a multi-purpose hall and a hostel on the sprawling Prampram site for the project with an estimated cost $600,000 spanning a 12-month period.
The funding of the project is internally generated from the Ghana Football Association’s finances and FA President, Kwesi Nyantakyi believes when completed it would enhance the footballing operations of the sport body.
“This project is line with our development programme. Getting the needed training facilities in place would boost the game at all levels. The FA has to own its own technical centre and that remains a key to developing every aspect of the game,” Kwesi Nyantakyi said.
After the second phase, the third and final phase of the project bringing the total cost $2.5 million would be rolled out. And the final phase would include a clinic, gymnasium, auditorium for seminars and a sports hall, says Awuah Nyamekye, an Executive Committee member.
Already, the existing facility has two training pitches, a hostel and an administrative structure.
The first phase of the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence was made possible through the FIFA Goal Project $400,000 grant by world football governing body.
When the centre is complete, the national camp would have full time personnel serving in various capacities to develop the game at all levels.
