With some three months to go for the African Cup of Nations, the entire country including the President, J.A. Kufour, are bracing up for startling performance by the Black Stars as Ghana host fifteen other nations and the rest of the world in four different cities in the country
With some massive infrastructural development across the countryside readying up for the world, the lenses would be turned to Ghana when the competition kicks off next year.
But the nation’s interest is certainly the Black Stars, four-time champions of the African Cup of Nations, who are one of the sides tipped to land the trophy.
The Black Stars by virtue of being host are excused from the qualifying campaign. But the team’s preparations has been on-going with a series of friendly games geared at getting the team ready to take on the rest of the continent.
Football has enjoyed tremendous support from government, and on Friday, the President, J.A. Kufour granted members of the Ghana Football Association audience at the Castle, Osu in Accra, which is the seat of government.
And the talk was just about the game and the Black Stars’ preparations towards CAN 2008 as the FA team led by its President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, Fred Pappoe - Vice President, Kofi Nsiah – General Secretary and head of media relations, Randy Abbey briefed the President.
The President was handed an up-to-date report on Ghana’s preparations ahead of the competition and informed about the programme which includes the match arrangements and the financial outlay in the run up to Africa’s flagship sporting event.
Aside the huge investments put in by government, President Kufour, a proud supporter of the team who carries the number one supporter tag, promised his government’s support and hopes of crowning it off with Ghana lifting the trophy for the fifth time on February 10 when the competition ends.
Even though smarting himself from the Black Stars’ loss to Saudi Arabia, the President, reminded the FA about the setback. He charged the Football Association to ensure that such results are not repeated.
FA President, Kwesi Nyantakyi apologized for the defeat on Tuesday explaining that all concerns and suggestions has been taken on to ensure that the Black Stars hit the winning road with the CAN 2008 trophy as the ultimate target.
