Every kid is certainly got a right to play and the ‘Special One’, Jose Mourinho together with his Chelsea entourage managed to inspire Ghanaian children to do just that.
And the Chelsea coach was all too pleased with the clubs humanitarian work in Ghana courtesy their global charity partner, Right To Play.
Mourinho sees the humanitarian angle to his job more as a human face of great value to the football club, and says great football clubs cannot be borne out of only trophies, cups and big wins on the field of play.
The Chelsea manager was talking at a conference for the Ghanaian media to launch Chelsea's visit in partnership with Right to Play.
“The most important thing is that Chelsea are moving in the right direction because to be a big club, we don't need to just chase things like cups and victories,' Mourinho said.
“This project is very important for Chelsea and a great institution like Right to Play but is more important for the countries where we go and the kids where we give some happiness and some dreams.”
After the media briefing, Jose Mourinho led the Chelsea team which also included former captain, Marcel Desailly to the El-Wak Stadium in the Ghanaian capital, Accra to hold coaching clinics for young players.
The club's Academy Manager, Neil Bath, goalkeeping coach, Silvino Louro and players Eddie Newton, Michael Mancienne, Jack Corck and Ghanaian-born Seth Nana Ofori-Twumasi are part of the Chelsea delegation.
Ghana midfielder, Michael Essien is expected in Accra on Wednesday evening and would join the rest of the visiting team on the second leg of their humanitarian visit which takes the Stamford Bridge side to Tamale in the Northern part of Ghana.
Despite his absence, Jose Mourinho had kind words for his player: “People like to talk about Michael Essien, saying he is a great football player, but I prefer to say he is a great man.
“We are very, very happy to have him with us and Ghana should be very proud, not just because he is a great player but because of the way he behaves in sport and in society. The message he leaves in Europe from an African country, I think you should be very proud. “The fact that Chelsea fans voted him to be their Player of the Year, the recognition from the supporters is the best thing a football player can have. “I hope he can come here and help Ghana to be successful in your African Nations Cup, played in your home, and I also hope you understand that I need him so much that you will leave him with me two more weeks.”
The delegation's ultimate objective is to partner Right To Play to create awareness of the Sport for Development and Peace Movement to the Ghanaian public and the world.
The Movement evolved out of the growing evidence that strengthening the right of children to play enhances their healthy development and builds stronger communities.
Prior to the press session, Jose Mourinho visited Ghana’s deputy minister for sports, O.B. Amoah in his office to announce the team’s objective.
The Chelsea manager presented the sports minister with a jersey autographed by the team.
