Ghana's President, John Agyekum Kufuor yesterday conferred the second highest national honour, the Order of the Volta on members of the senior national team, the Black Stars.
The award was in honour of the team's impressive performance at the World Cup in Germany.
The award is government’s appreciation of the team’s achievement - emerging as the only African team to make the knockout round of the competition.
More than half of the team and their technical handlers received their medals at the Castle, Osu.
The president expressed gratitude to the players and encouraged them to build on the achievement for greater laurels in the future.
"Ghana over the past fortnight has been experiencing a wave of confidence, happiness and goodwill in a way we haven't experienced before, all because of the exploits of the Black Stars," Kufuor said at a reception for the team on Monday.
"Before our team left [for Germany], not many of us thought we had any chance at all, because the tournament was a gathering of the mighty and powerful.
"[But] the team went and exhibited itself so well that the whole world is asking to know where Ghana is on the world map.
"That is why we are gathered here to confer these honours to you for the work you've done for Ghana.
"We cannot really put money to the value on your achievement.
"Within the short space of two weeks you've raised the flag of Ghana so high, to levels that even some of the most powerful nations in the world are beginning to look at Ghana," the president said.
FA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi was the first to be decorated with the Order of the Volta by president Kufour.

"We congratulate Ratomir Dujkovic and the management team.
"The playing body would always be remembered for the honour and dignity brought to our land.
