Coach Marcello Lippi says he is prepared to sacrifice style for points in Italy's opening Group E game against Ghana on Monday in Hannover.
Italy are one of the most experienced teams in the tournament and are on an 18-game unbeaten run, and Lippi says getting the win is his priority.
"All that counts is getting the victory," said Lippi.
"A strong start is imperative but we must be wary. Ghana are full of talent and pace but I have faith in my team."
Italy have never lost to an African side, and Lippi says it is vital that they get their campaign off to a winning start.
"The first game determines how you approach the second and that determines the approach for the third," he said.
"We're tense but excited. We're about to play the most important tournament of our lives. Nerves are normal."
Lippi has confirmed that playmaker Francesco Totti will play some part in the game.
Totti, who recently recovered from a serious leg injury, has shown a vast improvement during this week's training.
"I have evaluated Totti's form and I've seen him grow in confidence and fitness," said Lippi.
"Totti will play against Ghana. I never doubted that he wouldn't recover having seen him improve in every training session. He may not play the whole game, though."
