Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah continued with his impressive form in the run up to the world cup when he scored over the weekend for club, Fenerbahce. Appiah scored Fenerbahce’s third goal in their 4-1 win against Ankaragucu in the Turkish league. In France, defender John Mensah was on hand in the Rennes team that recorded their fifth consecutive win with a 1-0 victory over Metz. Anthony Obodai was also on the losing side for Sparta Rotterdam. Obodai was taken off in the 60th minute in their 0-1 loss to FC Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivise. Feyernoord’s new Ghanaian recruit from their Ghanaian feeder side, Mohammed Abubakari was on the bench when the Dutch team lost 0-1 to AZ Alkmaar. Ajax Amsterdam fielded their Ghanaian born duo of Emmanuel Boakye and Jeffrey Sarpong in the 2-3 defeat to FC Groningen. Sarpong who featured for the Dutch junior team in the FIFA world under 17 competition last year in Peru came off the bench. Michael Essien was on hand for Chelsea in their lone goal defeat to Fulham. The loss was Chelsea’s third in the English Premiership this season. In the German Bundesliga, Kevin Prince Boateng played for Hertha Berlin in their game against Armenia Belefield. Still in Germany, there was no joy for Ghana’s potential striking pair, Isaac Boakye and Mathew Amoah.
Both players sat out their club’s games over the weekend with various injuries. Matthew Amoah’s debut for his new club, Dortmund is still on hold. Midfielder Otto Addo is still struggling to break into the Mainz starting lineup. He remained on the bench as Mainz lost 1-2 away to Bayer Leverkusen.
Hans Adu Sarpei saw action in Wolfburg’s 1-0 loss to Hamburg. AC Milan thrashed Sulley Ali Muntari’s Udinese 4-0. Muntari picked up a card in the early minutes of the game. Down South in Africa, former Hearts of Oak star Louis Agyemang played for Kaizer Chiefs in their goalless draw game with Swallows on Saturday.
