The CEO of AshantiGold, Kudjoe Fianoo says the slow pace of works at Len Clay Stadium is hampering the venue’s readiness to host this year’s CAF Champions League matches.
The stadium has been undergoing some renovation works in order to meet CAF’s hosting standards for the African Champions League.
Ghana’s African Champions League duo, Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak would be using the Len Clay stadium grounds as their base due to on-going construction works at the Baba Yara and Ohene Djan stadia for the country’s hosting of CAN 2008.
Kudjoe Fianoo says the AshantiGold, owners of the stadium would be forced to abandon the renovation exercise if no help comes soon later and advised the clubs who have applied to use the facility to look elsewhere.
According to Fianoo they decided to roof certain areas of the stadium and expand the sitting capacity of the facility based on the recommendation given by the CAF Inspecting team.
“But from the way things look now, it appears nobody cares and we have been left to our fate and the moment our resources dry up, we would be left with no option than to stop and continue again later when funds become available”.
Accra Hearts of Oak initially opted to honour their matches at the EL-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra but that facility failed to meet the CAF standards.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko would using the Len Clay stadium next week when they play Cameroon’s Aigle Royal de la Manoua after drawing 1-1 in Yaounde on Sunday.
Meanwhile two other Ghanaian clubs, Berekum Arsenals and King Faisal would be participating in the Confederations Cup competition have opted for the Sunyani Coronation Park.
The Sunyani Coronation Park is also being refurbished for the competition.
