Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has moved to address questions over his commitment to Ghana, insisting he would be at the African Cup of Nations if he could.
The summer signing from Lyon withdrew from the tournament in Egypt after suffering damaged ankle ligaments against West Ham on January 2.
A speedy recovery initially led to hopes that he could yet turn out for the Black Stars in the continental competition, but his subsequent failure to travel to Egypt led to rumours about his commitment to his national side.
However, Essien has now told Skysports that he is still in pain during light training, and that his loyalty to Ghana is unwavering.
"Chelsea bought me because I played well for my country," Essien told Skysports.
"And no-one can stop me from playing for Ghana, the country I love.
"I miss The Black Stars and I am sad that I am not with my national team-mates at the moment, but I am with them in spirit."
