Kumasi Asante Kotoko have been crowned league champions today after beating Berekum Arsenals 1-0 at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi.
The Porcupine Warriors won the inaugural edition of the Ghana Telecom sponsored league trophy for keeps. Substitute, Aziz Ansah converted a spot kick in the second half to give Kotoko the match winner.
Kotoko were handed the trophy in the presence of their life patron Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The Asantehene made a rare presence to watch his team crowned as champions before a packed stadium.
Kotoko finished the season with 63 points, seven points clear of their archrivals, Accra Hearts of Oak.
Coach Emmanuel Kwasi Afranie in a post match interview thanked the club’s supporters for helping him achieve his target.
“I am overwhelmed by the success attained by my boys today. I am happy for the players and the supporters. We have to build on this and put a good show in Africa.” Afranie told a local radio station.
The porcupine warriors have now won the league championship for a record twenty times.
Ebusua Dwarfs managed to complete a league double over Hearts of Oak, beating the Phobians 2-1 at the Robert Mensah stadium in Cape Coast.
However, victory for Dwarfs could not guarantee them a premiership place for next season as the Cape Coast side, with 32 points, have been relegated to the division one league alongside Kade Hotspurs.
Okwawu United will engage the winner of the national middle league to determine whether they will remain in the premiership next season.
Power FC playing at the Tema park beat Sekondi Hasaacas 2-1 while Bofoakwa Tano also posted a 2-1 win over King Faisal at the Sunyani Coronation park.
At the Carl Riendorff park in Dansoman, Liberty Professionals settled for a goalless draw game with AshantiGold.
In Kade, bottom club, Hotspurs’ 3-2 win over Feyenoord could not keep them in the elite division as they drop with 29 points.
Okwawu United also beat Real Sportive 3-1 and book a play-off berth with the winner of the national middle league to determine whether they will remain in the premiership next season.
Heart of Lions recorded a 2-0 win over Real Tamale United.
