Hosts, Ghana, Niger, Benin and Senegal are raring to have a go at the upcoming, WAFU under 20 mini tournament, which kicks off here in Accra tomorrow.
The competition, which forms part of ECOWAS' 30th anniversary celebrations, will have the winner playing in the finals slated for Abuja, Nigeria in October.
Gomoah Fetteh Feyenoord coach Sam Arday (pictured) together with Liberty Professionals coach Jones Attuquayfio are part of the tournament’s technical committee.
Sam Arday told Joy Sports that he expects a very competitive tournament.
The celebrated coach who has handled several youth team also concedes that age cheats is a huge problem confronting the development of youth players on the continent.
Concerns have been raised about the ages of players who participate in the age competitions.
Sam Arday insists that any player found guilty would be expelled from the competition.
A GFA management member and Chairman of the tournament’s local organizing committee Fred Pappoe, says he expects the three day tournament to be a resounding success.
“We have to nurture the youth for the future. These are the boys we would be relying on in the next four years.
“The aim of this tournament is to commemorate ECOWAS’ 30th anniversary celebration and groom the young boys to improve the quality of leagues in Africa.” Pappoe said.
