The inspection team from the Confederation of African Football has reposed confidence in Ghana to accomplish the task of hosting the rest of the continent on time.
The team ended its five-day familiarization tour yesterday with a press conference to update the local press on its opinion on Ghana’s preparation for CAN 2008.
CAF first Vice-president, General Seyi Memene, leader of the team said CAF is most impressed with the level of enthusiasm and commitment exhibited by the government and the CAN 2008 local Organizing Committee.
“We were impressed with the level of commitment shown by the local organizing committee. Every community (host city) that we have been to have shown their preparedness to host the competition.” The CAF first Vice-president said.
In response to sentiments he expressed at a meeting with Vice-President Aliu Mahama which seemed to contradict earlier complimentary remarks about the nation’s preparations for CAN 2008, General Memene restated that the team is concerned about the fact that there was no actual plan on the ground for the start of work on the venues for the tournament.
“Football and politics are different."
"We don’t tie in politics with football. We told the vice-president as it is but we are convinced that work would be completed.” Memene stated.
The chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr Kofi Amoah(pictured), was positive government would back its assurances to the CAF team with immediate action to ensure that Ghana does not disappoint.
“When we do it well, Ghana would shine, Africa would shine and CAF would shine,” Amoah said with a positive tone.
