Domestic champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko will attempt to reach the league stage of the Confederations Cup competition when they play the first leg of the final 16 game against Libya’s Al-Ittihad, Friday evening.

The Porcupine Warriors are hopeful of picking up a good result in Tripoli ahead of the second leg fixture in a fortnight’s time at their favourite, Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Johnson Smith would be guiding the Reds has a full squad to choose from with the return of Harrison Afful, who had to cut short a trial stint with Dutch side, Feyenoord to play in the final round of 16 first leg game.

Kotoko have Emmanuel Osei Kuffour back after their captain was suspended for their dramatic win against Dolphins FC of Nigeria in the previous round.

Asante Kotoko came close to Confederations Cup glory in 2004, but faulted to local rivals, Heart of Oak. But the Porcupine Warriors are determined to right the wrongs this time round.

And the Reds would be counting on Kufour, who won gold in the maiden Confederations Cup competition in 2004 during his time with Heart of Oak, to inspire his colleagues to victory.

“I have played here before and know how difficult it is. I would be do my very best to help my colleagues go through this game.

“It’s a young squad but a very determined one. We would want to reach the league stage and that comes with hard work.

“However, we are very positive about our chances,” the veteran captain says.

A good result in Tripoli will smoothen Kotoko’s path into the league stages of the Confederations Cup.
