It might be early days at the 2008 African Cup of Nations but President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi says whatever happens, Ghana will emerge a winner from the competition.
Aside the prospects of a record-equaling fifth title success at the tournament, Kwesi Nyantakyi looks at the bigger picture of football development in the country.
Though hoping for a title success at the CAN to add to the success story of his reign as President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi says, the massive infrastructural development that has been put in place for the hosting of the 26th edition of the Nations Cup would make Ghana the biggest beneficiary when the curtain to the competition is drawn on February 10. “The stadiums and the improved infrastructure bodes really well for the development of the game here. It means that we can now play our local games in better stadiums and hopefully attract better television audience and strengthen football as a business here,” the President of the Ghana Football Association said.
Ghana had two major stadiums in Accra and Kumasi which measured up to international standards but two new stadia have been built in Sekondi and Tamale with the existing ones remodeled. Also a number of turfs have been developed into standard training pitches.
Until recently, Ghana could only count three stadiums, those in Accra, Kumasi and Obuasi as the only structures up to international standard.
The government of Ghana has also promised to make budgetary support available for the building of new stadia and the development of existing ones across the country.
And apart from government’s role, the Ghana Football Association hasn’t relented in its bid to develop facilities for the game.
A day before the start of the 26th edition of the African Cup of Nations, the FA together with FIFA unveiled three Goal Projects in the country – an artificial training pitch at the Tema Park, the technical training centre in Prampram and the FA’s secretariat.
The projects largely funded by FIFA, were also supported with additional funds from the Ghana Football Association and government.
