He may not have scored for the local Black Stars over the weekend and that rather represents a contrasting picture of the scoring prowess of Eric Bekoe.
Impressive goal scoring run in the OneTouch Premier League has seen Eric Bekoe become one of the most exciting prospects, having bagged in a total of eleven goals in fifteen league games.
However, Bekoe, playing a lead role for the local Black Stars in the weekend’s African Nations Championship qualifier against Niger could not find target in Ghana’s 2-0 victory at the Tamale Sports Stadium.
Much was expected from the striker as a rout looked a possibility for the local Black Stars but the scoring duties on the day fell to John Boye and Dominic Adiyiah with Ghana scoring a goal in each half of the game.
Eric Bekoe remains confident of matching his scoring form in the league with the Black Stars as he seeks to break his goal duck in the national shirt.
Speaking after Ghana’s win on Sunday, the Asante Kotoko striker told www.ghanafa.org he is unperturbed as he looks ahead at improving on his game ahead of the return leg in a fortnight in Niamey.
“It happens in football and there’s nothing one can do to change the situation. You have to remain calm and play on.
“Top players miss goal scoring chances. With this performance, I am just going to do my homework well and prepare for any future assignments.”
The maiden competition designed by CAF for only home-based players of its member countries has been welcomed by soccer administrators on the continent who have struggled in the past to raise home sides having relied heavily on players featuring the leagues outside the shores of Africa.
Aside Africa’s club competitions, Eric Bekoe believes the new African Nations Championship will help prepare players plying their trade in the domestic leagues to reach an appreciable level and break into the regular national team.
“It’s (African Nations Championship) a chance for we (the locals), to prove ourselves and make it to the senior side.
“It’s every player’s hope to get into the senior side and we’ve got to make it. This competition offers us the opportunity to break into the senior team,” Bekoe said.
