The journey towards the qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Games will be over this weekend when big names, Ghana and Nigeria battle it out for Africa’s sole place.

The top side from Africa’s 2008 Olympic women’s qualifying campaign certainly seals a place at the Beijing Games, and Ghana are in the driving seat ahead of favourites, Nigeria.

Black Queens coach Mumuni Gamel, after guiding the national team to the finals of the Africa Women championships over the weekend, now braces up for the big challenge away in Nigeria, this Saturday.

“The team played very well today and also scored goals. Our aim was to qualify and we have done it,” a thrilled Gamel said after Ghana qualified for the 2009 Africa Women championships with a 3-0 home win over Ivory Coast.

However, Gamel, aware of the task ahead has returned to the national camp in Prampram as he tries to put his team together after having observed some lapses in Ghana’s last game.

“But I have observed on some lapses, and will work on that before leaving for the finals,” said Gamel, who assumed the reigns of the team last week after taking over from former trainer Isaac Paha.

Ghana needs a draw against the Super Falcons to clinch an automatic and a historic qualification to the Beijing Games.

The Black Queens hold a hundred percent record in the qualifying campaign after defeating Nigeria at home and recording back-to-back wins over South Africa.

The runners up of the group will still have a chance of making it to Beijing when they play Brazil in a play-off for a place in the finals of the 2008 Olympics.
