Ghana has picked silver at the 5th edition of the African Women’s Championship after going down by a lone goal in the final to host, Nigeria.
Nigeria, thus confirm their dominance on the continent, winning their fifth title since the inception of the women’s championship in 1998.
And, reigning female footballer of the year, Perpetua Nkwocha separated both sides as she scored the winner for the Super Falcons in the first half before an expectant home crowd in Warri.
The goal also crowned Nkwocha as the competition’s top scorer with seven goals.
Saturday’s final tie was the third time both nations had met in the final of the women’s competition.
Ghana and Nigeria have secured qualification for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted by China.
Saturday’s game would be the third between both nations in the finals of the women’s competition with Ghana losers on the two previous encounters.
However, Ghana still remains the only nation to have beaten Nigeria in women’s football on the continent.
The Black Queens recorded a 1-0 victory over the Super Falcons in 2002 edition of the African Women’s Championship.
Earlier on Friday, South Africa beat Cameroon 5-4 on penalties to win bronze after regulation time had ended 2-2 at the Oleh Stadium.
Ghana secured a place in the final berth after topping Group B where the Black Queens kept a clean sheet winning all three games.
The Black Queens beat Mali, Cameroon and DR Congo in the group stage before edging out South Africa in the semi finals.
