Ghana’s quest for honours in the African Women’s Championship begins on Sunday when the Black Queens take on Mali in the second group B game.
The Black Queens are paired with the women’s sides of Cameroon, DR Congo and Mali in Group of the 5th edition of the African Women’s Championship, which kicks off Saturday in Nigeria.
Nigeria, host of the eight-nation competition would kick start the competition when they play Equatorial Guinea in opening the Group A game at the in Warri.
The other fixture in Group A would see South Africa facing off with Algeria.
Ghana’s Black Queens, two-time runners up will be attempting a first major continental success when they clash with the Malians in Oghara.
Winners from both groups would battle it out for the title at stake and secure automatic qualification tickets for the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled for China in September.
The Black Queens are hopeful of clinching the continental title, which they have missed out narrowly on two occasions, losing out to host, Nigeria in both finals.
Ghana, highly rated in women’s football are bent of rewriting the scripts in the female sport which Nigeria has seemingly dominated with the Super Falcons eyeing a fifth African Women's Championship.
The Black Queens remain the only team in Africa to have beaten Nigeria, with a 1-0 victory in the 2002 edition of the AWC, which was staged ironically in Delta State, where this year's tournament is being held.
Black Queens coach, Isaac Paha has in his eighteen member playing squad three foreign-based players.
Adjoa Bayor, the 2003 African Women’s Footballer of the Year, who recently returned from a short spell in China together with the U.S based Mavis Danso and Patricia Ofori are the three foreign players in the Ghana squad.
All three have considerable experiences on the African terrain and capable of re-writing the scripts in women’s football.
And they would be key to Ghana’s title aspirations beginning with the game against Mali.
